Detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) have apprehended Wesley Kipkoech Langat, a court clerk stationed in Busia, for allegedly demanding and accepting a Kes180,000 bribe to compromise an ongoing criminal case.
Langat is alleged to have acted on behalf of a Magistrate at the station by demanding the bribe from an accused person as an inducement to secure a lenient penalty for a driver and six co-accused individuals whose commercial vehicle had been impounded by police over alleged traffic violations.
Following a report from the affected motorist, EACC officers launched an investigation and staged a covert operation, arresting the clerk immediately after he received the funds.
The suspect was taken to the EACC Western Regional Office in Bungoma for processing prior to being held at Bungoma Police Station.
Investigations remain ongoing as part of the commission’s broader effort to combat public sector corruption.
