Six former government officials and contractors have been released on bond and bail terms over an alleged irregular KES 1.5 billion tender awarded ahead of the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
According to court papers seen by kauntinews.com, the contract which was valued at about KES 1.5 billion, was awarded in 2017 for the supply and installation of security, access control, communications, audio-visual and pitch lighting systems at various stadia.
The six include former Sports Principal Secretary Peter Kirimi Kaberia, Senior Principal Finance Officer Stephen Njoroge Muthuma, Sports Kenya engineer John Kiende Ruga, and three other officials and contractors.
Further investigations by EACC established that about KES 330 million was paid as an advance under a contract that was not procured in accordance with the Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Act.
The contractor subsequently failed to fulfil its obligations, resulting in the alleged loss of public funds.
They face charges including conspiracy to commit an economic crime, unlawful acquisition of public property, money laundering and abuse of office.
Appearing at the Milimani Anti corruption court on 8th September 2026, All the accused denied the charges.
Prosecution, led by Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Norah Achieng and assisted by Principal Prosecution Counsel Kennedy Panyako and Prosecution Counsel Thelma Nanjaya, did not oppose the release of the accused on bond and bail.
The court granted Ksh. 3 million bond or Ksh. 1 million cash bail to Amb. Kaberia, Stephen Njoroge, Enock Onditi, John Kiende, Anthony Mwangi and Lease Pride Limited.
Samuel Mbaa Njoroge, Taxwise Consulting Limited and Liroma Assurance Services Limited were each granted Ksh. 2 million bond or Ksh. 600,000 cash bail.
The court ordered all accused persons to deposit their passports within seven days.
The case will be mentioned on 15th September 2026.
