Comedian Eric Omondi and seven others have been released after denying charges of obstructing the free flow of traffic along Moi Avenue in Nairobi’s Central Business District.
Omondi was granted a free bond by Milimani Chief Magistrate Caroline Nyaguthie, while his seven co-accused were each released on a KSH 2,000 personal bond.
The comedian was arrested on Monday, September 7, while collecting signatures at the National Archives in Nairobi in support of his Punguza Mzigo campaign.
The initiative seeks major constitutional changes, including reducing Kenya’s 47 counties to eight.
However, appearing in court today, the eight, Eric Omondi, Cyprian Ateka, Alex Ngungu, John Ndungu, Kelvin Mwasi, Josiah Ogutu, Wilson Ouma and Oliver Odhiambo, were jointly charged with obstructing the operation of motor vehicles on a road, contrary to Section 58(c) of the Kenya Roads Act, Chapter 408 of the Laws of Kenya.
According to the charge sheet seen by kauntinews.com, on September 7, 2026, along Moi Avenue in Nairobi CBD, the eight, together with others not before the court, unlawfully obstructed the free flow of traffic.
They were arrested on the same day without a warrant and spent the night in custody before appearing before the Milimani Law Courts on September 8, 2026.
The lawyer representing the eight, Danstan Omari and Willis Otieno argued that the “Punguza Mzigo” is being done for public interest.
“Bail should not be used to punish an accused person. Let’s make this sweet and short. We urge this court to free [them] on bond. Punguza Mzigo is being done for public interest, “stated the lawyers.
The court released all the accused persons on personal bond as they wait for the hearing on 29th September 2026.
