Hannah Wambui Mwaura, alias Anna Wambui Mwaura, a former Deputy Director of Audit at the Office of the Auditor General, was on 6th July 2026 arraigned before the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court over allegations of securing employment using a forged university degree.
She pleaded not guilty to charges of Forgery, Uttering a False Document, Deceiving a Principal, and Fraudulent Acquisition of Public Property, and was released on a cash bail of Kes 450,000 or a bond of Kes 1 million with a surety of a similar amount.
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested her on 4th August 2026 and initially held her at Integrity Centre Police Station before releasing her on a Ksh 100,000 police cash bail prior to her court appearance.
Investigations revealed that in July 2013, the Office of the Auditor General advertised for the position of Assistant Manager – Audit, which required a recognized Bachelor’s degree, a Master of Business Administration or related field, professional accounting qualifications and at least eight years of audit experience.
To support her application, Ms. Mwaura presented a forged Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting Option), Second Class Honours (Upper Division) degree certificate, purportedly awarded by Mount Kenya University on 20th August 2010.
She secured the position and was later promoted to Deputy Director-Audit. However, EACC established that Ms. Mwaura was still a student at Mount Kenya University pursuing the same programme at the time of recruitment and had not yet graduated.
Through these fraudulent qualifications, she unlawfully earned Kes 28,468,754.14 in salaries between 3rd February 2013 and 23rd May 2024.
Following the investigation, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) concurred with EACC’s findings and approved the criminal charges.
The Commission announced it will initiate civil proceedings to recover the fraudulently acquired salaries and benefits.
Additionally, EACC urged all government ministries, departments, agencies, and county governments to thoroughly verify academic credentials during recruitment and promotion, while warning the public that similar offenses will face strict prosecution under the law.
