Key CCTV footage shows that Albert Ojwang was alive and responsive when first brought to Central Police Station, but was no longer responsive by the time he was moved out of the facility.
This revelation formed the core of the testimony delivered by Mr. Joshua Mutua, Head of Forensics at the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), as the prosecution pressed forward with its murder trial before the Kibera High Court on 21st July 2026.
Mr. Mutua, a video investigations specialist, guided the court through a minute-by-minute forensic reconstruction of the events of June 7, 2025.
Leveraging retrieved video logs and photos of the station’s physical layout, he mapped out Ojwang’s arrival, handling, and eventual extraction from the police facility.
The forensic specialist detailed how his probe began on June 9, 2025, when he and co-investigator Mr. Naphtali Nduhi inspected the station’s surveillance setup.
After contacting the installation technicians first a technician named Dan and subsequently another named Aaron Mr. Mutua gained access to the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) office.
Upon arrival, he photographed the Digital Video Recorder (DVR) unit, noting that its power source had been unplugged.
Once power was restored to the unit, Mr. Mutua ran a diagnostic scan on the system logs. His examination revealed that the DVR had been intentionally formatted at 7:30:14 a.m. on June 8, 2025, right inside the OCS’s office.
A formal forensic exhibit report documenting the tampered device was compiled and signed the following day. Despite the wipe, forensic specialists successfully extracted critical footage from both Central Police Station and Mbagathi.
The recovered material effectively captured the interactions between police officers and the deceased, securing vital evidence for the trial.
Earlier in the session, the prosecution recalled its third witness (PW3), a records officer at Central Police Station.
She concluded her account regarding the missing recordings from June 6 and 7, explaining the exact circumstances surrounding the deletion of the surveillance data on June 8.
The state’s case is being prosecuted by Senior Assistant Directors of Public Prosecutions (SADPP) Mr. Jalson Makori and Ms. Wangui Gichuhi, alongside Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions (ADPP) Mr. Dancun Ondimu, OGW.
