Former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has secured a partial legal victory after the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court acquitted him and his co-accused of a key money laundering charge in the ongoing Sh14 million graft case.
In a ruling delivered by Trial Magistrate Isabellah Barasa, the court found insufficient evidence to sustain the money laundering charge under the Proceeds of Crime and Anti-Money Laundering Act, effectively clearing the accused persons on count three.
The court, however, determined that the prosecution had established a prima facie case on four other counts, placing the accused on their defence in line with provisions of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act.
The prosecution had presented ten witnesses alleging irregularities in the award of a Nairobi County tender for heavy equipment hire in 2018.
Despite these claims, the court’s dismissal of the money laundering count marked a significant development in favour of the defence, narrowing the scope of the case the accused must now answer to.
The matter is scheduled for mention on June 6, 2026, when directions on the defence hearing will be taken, as the accused prepare to challenge the remaining charges in court.
