Fresh details in the murder of city lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu have emerged, with investigators now linking the case to the killing of clinical psychologist Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso.
According to the DCI, Police Constable Julius Cheruiyot has been arrested and identified as the suspected gunman in Mbobu’s murder, following a year-long investigation by homicide detectives and forensic experts.
Mbobu was murdered on September 9, 2025, while driving home from work along Magadi Road in Nairobi.
Investigators say they have recovered a Ceska pistol that had been issued to Cheruiyot at the time of the offence.
Ballistic examination, according to the DCI, established that the firearm was used in the fatal attack on Mbobu.
Cheruiyot is currently in police custody as detectives process him ahead of his expected arraignment in court.
The DCI documents further indicate that Inspector Kenneth Sang, who remains at large, allegedly coordinated the attack in liaison with Rose Mbithe.
It is this detail that has brought the Mbobu murder investigation into the orbit of the separate case involving Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso.Mbithe is already in police custody in connection with the killing of Dr Mutiso, who was fatally shot in Upper Hill, Nairobi, on July 29, 2026.
According to investigators, the alleged involvement of Mbithe and the identification of Sang as a person who allegedly coordinated the Mbobu attack have opened a new line of inquiry into whether the two killings were connected.
Mbobu was murdered on September 9, 2025, while driving home from work along Magadi Road in Nairobi.
An earlier parliamentary account indicated that two assailants on a motorcycle accosted the lawyer near Brookhouse International School before one of them opened fire.
Mbobu was shot eight times, with four spent cartridges recovered at the scene and two bullet heads retrieved from his body for ballistic analysis. For almost a year, detectives from the Homicide Directorate and forensic experts have been working to establish who planned and executed the killing.
The latest breakthrough has seen investigators identify Cheruiyot as the alleged gunman and recover the firearm they say was used in the attack.
Meanwhile, the investigation into Dr Mutiso’s murder continues, with several suspects already in custody or facing charges, including Mbithe.
The DCI says investigations into both cases remain active as detectives pursue other suspects and seek to establish the motive, planning and execution of the two killings.
With Inspector Sang still at large, detectives are now pursuing further leads to establish the full extent of the alleged connection between the murder of Lawyer Mbobu and that of Dr Mutiso.
