A Nairobi delivery man, who sold clients’ luggage and used the money to pay for his mother’s cancer medical bills, is now asking the court for forgiveness.
Appearing at the Milimani Law Court on 9th June 2026 before Senior Principal Magistrate Paul Mutai, the accused pleaded guilty to failing to deliver luggage for a client who had ordered sacks of sweet potatoes. Instead, he sold them to cover his mother’s urgent medical expenses.
He expressed remorse, explaining that he knew the luggage belonged to a client.
“I ask for forgiveness. The luggage I was carrying, I knew that it belonged to a client. But at that time, my mother was admitted to the hospital, and she was in a critical condition,” he pleaded.

He further stated that he held a fundraiser to clear her medical bills but only managed to raise 3,000 shillings, while she still needed urgent treatment. Overwhelmed by the situation, he explained, “I took the sacks of sweet potatoes and sold them.”
He told the court that he used the proceeds from selling the sweet potatoes to pay for his mother’s hospital bills and medication, as she was in her final days. Sadly, she passed away after the potatoes had already been sold.
The accused added, “If it was something like a kidney that was needed, I could have donated mine, but because it was cancer I couldn’t, and it was difficult to get the money. Because it was my mother, I couldn’t just stand by and do nothing.” He emphasized that “the money was urgently needed,” and that desperation led him to sell the client’s goods.
He asked the court for leniency, stating, “This was my first offense, and I am willing to pay back the money if given time.” He further pleaded, “I ask that my situation be taken into consideration, and I hope for a reduction in punishment.”
In his ruling, presiding magistrate stated that the suspect will remain in custody until 18th June as a pre-bail report is being prepared and be submitted.
