While appearing before Principal Magistrate Paul Mutahi at the Milimani Law Courts On April 4th, 2026, the suspect Patrick Mutinda who is suspected of orchestrating a fraudulent recruitment scheme that preyed on members of the public with false promises of securing jobs in the Kenya Defense Force (KDF) was detained for five days at Kilimani Police Station.
The prosecution, represented by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), outlined that Mutinda, alongside co-accused Anthony Muthangya, allegedly defrauded Nicholas Wambua Muthangya and his family of over 4.5 million shillings.

Court documents seen by kauntinews.com reveal that the victims were promised spots in the 2025 KDF recruitment exercise, with the suspects claiming they could facilitate the process in exchange for cash.
Investigations showed that between November 2025 and January 2026, the complainant transferred approximately 4.5 million shillings, including sh 400,000 via M-Pesa and sh 4,154,000 into an Equity Bank account linked to the suspects.
After receiving the money, the suspects reportedly switched phone numbers, adopted fake identities, and cut off all communication, then relocating from Nairobi to Mombasa in an apparent effort to evade arrest.
Mutinda was arrested on April 9th during a DCI operation along Mama Ngina Street and was later transferred to Nairobi for processing.
The prosecution requested a seven-day detention at Kilimani Police Station to facilitate search operations in Utawala, financial investigations, and the pursuit of other suspects believed to be in Kitui and Changamwe.
Defense counsel opposed the request for a longer detention, arguing that Mutinda had fully cooperated with authorities from Mombasa to Nairobi.
He also noted that he is a known associate of the complainant and suggested that part of the stolen money had already been refunded, requesting only a two-day detention.
However, Magistrate Paul Mutahi approved a five-day detention period. Mutinda will remain in custody at Kilimani Police Station as authorities continue with investigations.
